So many challenges exist in our world today! There is not a day that goes by without us thinking about how we can give and support our wonderful community in song and in our daily lives. Thank you, thank you to this community that embraces life, promotes farm-to-fork and nature, has tremendous cultural richness, and aspires to greatness!

Your help and support are incredibly meaningful to us because we so strongly support many other outstanding local organizations and individuals doing wonderful work in our region addressing the needs of so many. We are again reminded of how fragile we are and how meaningful the arts are: music in particular can lift our spirits and keep us going.

Thank you for your help and support in order for Zado to continue to exist. Our goals for the coming year and decade: Embrace life and love for our earth, family, community, and world.

The Fragility of Goodness
Zado Hope for Peace

OTČE NAŠ – The Lord’s Prayer, sung in Ukrainian
Arranged for four parts by composer Nikolai Kedrov (1871-1940) Matthew 6:9-13:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Zado Journey of Friends CD
for Armenia

Gorani is part of several Armenian songs and dances. This version, Gorani (Daronee), was choreographed by Azat Gharibian for the Armenian State Song and Dance Ensemble and taught by Tom Bozigian in the U.S. The song and dance is about love for Daronee, one of the most devastated towns of the Armenian genocide that occurred between 1915 and 1922. Although Gorani was a love song during the Middle Ages, it became a "term of endearment" in which the longing for the lost homeland and the lost beloved become one.

Learned from the dance taught by Tom Bozigian, the repertoire of the Tatoul Altounian Song and Dance Ensemble, and music from Anne Ehrhart, Svitanya. Instrumentalists: Sam Trunyan, duduk; Stefan Kochishan, clarinet and saxophone; Craig Long, bass and keyboard; Jan Volkoff, tupan and guitar.

Zado Mission

Inspired by traditional Balkan folk singing, music, and dance, Zado is a Sacramento-based vocal ensemble performing traditional and contemporary arrangements of international folk songs, particularly those from Eastern Europe. Our mission is to educate and inspire others about the beauty, complexity, styles, and intimacy of the music we love; to research, record, and preserve high-quality international folk music; and to present programs, recordings, and new art forms that feature unique folk harmonies and rhythms. We celebrate the splendor of the human voice, the cultural roots of the music, and contemporary expressions. Zado endeavors to inspire others to treasure their own heritage and traditions as well as those of others.

Donations

Zado is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that relies on grants and donations to help us continue in our mission to educate and inspire others, which involves promoting understanding and good will in our community and elsewhere. In a world facing greater possibilities for mistrust and unrest among human beings, it is becoming more important to communicate with others the values of acceptance and appreciation of all cultural heritages and people. Learning about the unique cultures and music from around the world has enriched our lives as well as the lives of others and is great fun! Please join us in our goals by providing a donation and by purchasing our music. Thank you for your support!
As ambassadors and teachers, Zado members continually research to expand their knowledge base of Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian songs, music, and vocal techniques and creative ways to perform and present them. As performers, Zado upholds a tradition of more than four decades of presenting concerts, teaching, and celebrating international folk music with schools, festivals, organizations, and the folk-dance community in northern California. As recording artists, Zado has produced and distributed three CDs/albums. As community members, Zado pursues its overarching goal of delivering performances and instruction that inspire individuals to treasure their own cultural roots and those of others, a theme that continues to have meaning and relevance particularly in today's world.
